Your garage stores some of your most expensive possessions including your car and white goods. For many, the garage has ended up as a secondary storage place for sports equipment, bikes, Christmas Trees, power tools, and more.

As well as storing valuables, it may even have an entry point into your home. You may not give too much thought to your garage or the ultimate security of it, but it is important to understand that thieves see your garage as a prime opportunity.

  1. Keep your garage door closed

Think leaving your garage door open is fine as long as it’s during the daylight hours? Think again. Thieves scope out the homes they hit well before they attempt a break-in, and an open garage door gives them all the information they need to determine if they need to come back to your place.

With the door open, they can tell exactly what you have to offer. That includes a wide range of things, including:

  • Your vehicle(s)
  • Lawnmowers and yard equipment
  • Power tools and hand tools
  • Bikes
  • Motorcycles

Sure, your homeowner’s insurance will cover at least some of the loss, but let’s face it – it won’t really cover the replacement costs. You will get fair value only, which means you will not be able to replace everything that was stolen.

Don’t show your stuff to the neighbourhood, keeping your garage door closed helps hide what you have.

2. Don’t leave the garage door remote in your car

People tend to leave their garage door remote controls in the centre console of their cars in full view of others.

This makes it easy for the thieves in our community to enter and exit our homes with relative ease. Police have noticed a trend recently whereby garage remote controls are being used to unlawfully enter homes. These remotes are also being used to exit homes when stealing a vehicle from the location.

3. Lock the door between the garage and your home

Once a burglar has access to your garage, it should not mean they have access to the rest of your home. Install a deadlock on the door between your garage and the rest of your home.

4. Ensure your garage windows are secure

Don’t neglect to protect your garage windows. Consider frosted windows, security bars/security screens, and window locks to improve your security.

Anchors

  1. XTRA LOK Roller Door Anchor

XTRA-LOK Roller Door Security Latch Dead Lock can be fitted to Roller doors, Tilt a doors, Panel Lift and even sliding shed style doors. XTRA-LOK’s are excellent security for that flimsy domestic roller door, behind which is your pride and joy, or as in most cases these days an access door into your house. Even if your door is electric, an XTRA-LOK is piece of mind at night or when away on holiday.

XTRA-LOK’s are the best security for stopping intruders breaking in thru the roller door. If someone does get in other than thru the roller door, once in, opening your roller door is the easiest way for them to empty your premises. Once again XTRA-LOK’s will stop or at least slow them, and use up that limited window of opportunity the thief has by making them leave the way they came in. Double installation recommended for doors over 2.4m wide.

XTRA-LOK’s secure the door to the concrete with a simple latching technique taking seconds. When unlocked they lay flat to the floor. XTRA-LOK’s help prevent break-ins via the door being jimmied up, or as in a ram-raid situation they are also of great assistance in strong wind areas.

XTRA-LOK’s are constructed form steel treated with zinc for corrosion resistance. The hinge pin is 304 grade stainless steel for strength and durability. They are supplied with four hardened tamperproof concrete fasteners and four cup head bolts.

Many companies put security screens or bars on windows and doors and totally forget about their roller doors, leaving the roller door as the weakest easiest entry point for a thief. Another advantage of XTRA-LOK security is that if you secure your building and make it difficult for would be thieves, they will go elsewhere, which may be unfortunate for someone else but good for you.

The product comes complete with hardened tamper resistant concrete fixings and 4 cup head bolts.

Protect your valuable Sports Cars, Classic Cars and Hot Rods. Protect your Motorcycles , Harleys, Dirt Bikes, Road Bikes, Bicycles. Protect your Tools, Boats, Fishing gear, Hobby gear, Beer Fridge. Fitting an XTRA-LOK or two is a small price for peace of mind.
